The University has about 35 000 students who represent a visible community in the rather small (100 000 inhabitants) and old city of Uppsala. There a many green areas and historical buildings in the center of the city. Among them the University House, built in the 1880s, shown below. The Old University House from the 17th century, now an academic museum, is a beautiful post-renaissance building situated just across the University Park.

The renaissance Castle of Uppsala was founded by King Gustav Wasa, who united Sweden in the 16th century.

Uppsala is the seat of the archbishop of Sweden. The Uppsala Cathedral is the largest church in Scandinavia. Its construction started in 1260 and the church was inaugurated in 1435. Many famous Swedes are buried here, among them Carl von Linné.

Old Uppsala is the cradle of the Swedish kingdom. Under the hills three ancient kings are buried. The Old Uppsala church was erected in the 12th century, according to some sources at the site of a temple of the ancient gods of the vikings.

Near the center in Uppsala lies the original botanical garden and "orangerie" of Carl von Linné.
